U.S. Economic Data/Prices and Consumption

Inflation & Gas Prices

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) and gasoline prices are two of the most visible measures of what inflation feels like in everyday life. With the average price level for 1982–1984 set at 100, a CPI reading of 334.00 means overall prices are roughly 3.34 times their base-period level. The annual inflation rate is calculated by comparing the CPI with the same month one year earlier: ((current month’s CPI − CPI 12 months earlier) ÷ CPI 12 months earlier) × 100. For example, an increase from 324.00 to 334.00 produces an annual inflation rate of about 3.09%. The dashboard uses monthly data that are not seasonally adjusted.

Gas prices are especially salient because consumers see them posted on street corners and feel the change immediately at the pump. They affect household budgets, commuting, transportation, and distribution costs—and they can spill into politics as well. When gas prices rise sharply, public concern about the economy often rises with them, and presidents can face political blame even though fuel prices are driven by forces far beyond the White House.

About these indicators & methodology

Consumer Price Index. The CPI for All Urban Consumers measures the average change over time in the prices urban consumers pay for a representative basket of goods and services. The index reference base is the 1982–1984 average, which equals 100. The dashboard uses the not-seasonally-adjusted all-items series.

Annual inflation. Each monthly inflation rate is the percentage change in the CPI from the same month one year earlier. A 3% reading means the measured price level is 3% higher than it was 12 months before; it does not mean every individual price rose by the same amount.

Gas price. The gasoline series is the U.S. retail price for all grades and all formulations, expressed in dollars per gallon. It is a monthly, not-seasonally-adjusted end-of-period measure published by the Energy Information Administration. The gas-price year-over-year column uses the same 12-month comparison as the inflation rate.

Data updates. The page checks the current BLS and EIA series through FRED when opened. If the source cannot be reached, it retains the saved release. One missing CPI observation is shown as unavailable rather than estimated. The shared monthly history begins in April 1993.
