U.S. Economic Data/Household Finances

Delinquency Rates

The delinquency rate shows the share of outstanding loan and lease balances that are at least 30 days past due or have been placed in nonaccrual status. Put more simply, a 1.42% rate means that $1.42 of every $100 in outstanding balances is delinquent. The dashboard uses quarterly, seasonally adjusted Federal Reserve data.

Historically, rates around 1%–2% have represented relatively low levels of delinquency for total loans and leases, especially compared with the 7.35% peak reached in the first quarter of 2010. What qualifies as “high” or “low,” however, varies considerably by loan category.

Delinquency rates are worth watching because they can provide an early glimpse of financial stress building beneath the surface. As more borrowers fall behind, banks face a greater risk of losses and tighter credit conditions can follow. A low rate generally points to healthy household and business finances; a sustained rise can be an early warning that something in the credit system is beginning to strain.

About this indicator & methodology

What the rate measures. The Federal Reserve measures delinquent balances as a percentage of end-of-quarter loans and leases at insured U.S.-chartered commercial banks. This is a share of dollar balances, rather than a count of borrowers or loans. Loans are delinquent when they are at least 30 days past due and still accruing interest, or are in nonaccrual status.

How changes are calculated. Quarterly change compares a rate with the previous quarter; the headline year-over-year figure compares it with the same quarter one year earlier. These are relative percentage changes. For example, a decline from 1.45% to 1.42% is a 2.1% relative decline and a 0.03 percentage-point decline.

Annual charts. Each point is the simple average of available quarterly rates. An incomplete year is compared with the same quarters in the preceding year. The dashboard uses the shared history of these three categories, beginning in 1987. Table colors show lower to higher rates, and are not a risk rating.

Data updates. The page checks the Federal Reserve release when opened. If the source cannot be reached, it retains the saved release and displays its release date. The Federal Reserve may revise earlier figures. Read the source methodology.
